Get yourself a mechanical keyboard.

12 Mar,2022 by Admin

For us MacBook users, we all know that there comes a point in time where our keyboard just gives out on us. The mistypes, the dead keys and so on, we know the story. Then, you get to the apple store and what do you know… you’re out of the warranty window and you have to pay the dreaded apple tax, which can sometimes be worth more than your actual laptop! This way of living is no more. In this blog, we’re going to talk about mechanical keyboards and how they can improve your typing experience and save you a few trips to the genius bar.

What is a mechanical keyboard?

So, what is a mechanical keyboard? Developed in the 80s, a mechanical keyboard is a keyboard that is made with key switches. In general, key switches are usually spring-activated mechanisms, which can differ based on what type of key switches a user prefers. These switches are what make mechanical keyboards so special. These keyboards are usually made in higher quality and last longer than typical membrane style keyboards and laptop keyboards.

Mechanical keyboards can are highly customizable. Offering different types of switches with their unique characteristics, different keyboard layout configurations, sizes, and the functionality to reprogram keyboard keys.

A better typing experience

As mentioned before, the variety of key switches allows for different types of typing experiences. Some switches require less force to actuate while others have a tactile bump before the key is actuated. This can help with typing fatigue, fewer typos, and quicker typing, simply because you are comfortable! For those with careers that require us to type for long periods, comfortability is key to productivity. Let’s take a look at a couple of different types of key switches.

  • Cherry MX Blue switches offer a tactile bump and an audible click when typing. These characteristics are handy for those who want acoustic clicky feedback when typing.
  • Unlike the blue, the Cherry MX Red switch offers a smooth, linear, and silent click, requiring a light force to actuate. It’s my personal favorite, and gamers and typists most popularly use it.
  • Cherry MX Brown brings the blue and red characteristics together in a unique way. While they are pretty quiet compared to blue switches, they still give a tactile bump while typing.

Where size matters

Mechanical keyboards come in many different sizes to fit your needs. They can range from 100%( full size) keyboards to TKL(Ten Key Less-Removes the Numpad), all the way down to 40% compact keyboards. These options give you the freedom to only have the keys you need, taking up less desk space and allowing you to break away from solely using your MacBook/generic laptop keyboard.

I hope this blog post helps bring you into the world of mechanicals. They’re super fun to use, customize, and can be affordable. To learn more, ill be recommending some sites down below for you to check out. Happy Typing!
